Sleek, upbeat and refreshing like a cold glass of cola on a hot day, new single ‘Mirror’ by Christchurch artist ASHY feat. Vallé is an anthem for representation in a delicious package of alt-pop goodness. ASHY’s first release for the year, ‘Mirror’ has already gone off with a bang since its debut on the 28th of January, and the brand new accompanying music video, out today, promises to follow suit. Filmed at the Christchurch Town Hall, it’s dynamic, sassy and feel-good: the epitome of taking centre stage in your own life.

Written alongside Tami Neilson, Vallé, Name UL & Josie Moon (with production credits to Name UL (Emanuel Psathas) and Liam Quinn), ‘Mirror’ speaks to the importance of diversity in mainstream media and advertising, carrying the message that it shouldn’t be an anomaly to see someone who looks similar to yourself on screen and in magazines, something ASHY was confronted with when younger.

As she says, “I have subconsciously wanted to share this story that I’m talking about in this song for a long time. It’s about me as a kid seeing someone on TV that looked like me for the first time and realising I’d never seen that before. This was always a reality for me, to hardly ever be represented in mainstream media but I thought it’d be a cool perspective for a song. It’s a story that is more empowering than anything. I wanted to take a celebratory approach to this narrative and say that I want to be a mirror for people that don’t otherwise see themselves.”

It’s a fantastic sentiment that plays out perfectly in the single and video, which both adopt a light tongue-in-cheek feel rather than allowing the depth of the message to overwhelm them. Dancing over the infectious bass groove and tight rhythm, ASHY’s creamy vocals and catchy melody keep the tone upbeat as she playfully coaxes her listeners to take a different view of themselves, and in a perfect pairing, fellow Christchurch act Vallé’s rhymes add a punchy dynamic to the mix as he raps about the conflict between his roots and materialism.

A delectable single that lets a sense of fun dictate its purpose with warmth and depth, ‘Mirror’ celebrates the self-confidence that comes from feeling seen, heard and valued - an essential message for all.
